The Occupational Therapy Association of Hawai‘i will hold the Kaua‘i Symposium 2004 at the Radisson Kauai Beach Resort Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18.
Among the topics that will be covered during the symposium are:
• Understanding surgical and non-surgical management of osteoarthritis of the hip and knee.
• Learning protocols for pre- and post-op management of total knee and total hip replacement surgery patients.
• Demonstrating knowledge of principles for tendon injuries and Entrapment Neuropathies.
• Explaining the effects of shoulder impingement
• Understanding the NDT rationale for “treatment in function” (with a hands on clinical lab on Sunday.) Vendors include Aloha Medical Technology, Assistive Technology Resource Center, Gammie Home Supply, Hawaii Health Care Professionals, Hawaii Home Infusion, Kinesio Taping Association, Merck, Medtronic Neurological, Pfizer and Valpar Int. Corporation.
Speakers at the symposium include:
• David Rovinsky, M.D., FACs, a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, a Fellow for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He serves as Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
• Dr. Gilbert Hager is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He specializes in injury recovery and is a pain management specialist.
He is the Medical Director of the Ability Rehab. and Medical Services. He practices in Honolulu and Kauai.
• Barbara L. Kornblau, is the immediate past president of AOTA and Professor of O.T., Public Health, and Law at Nova Southeastern University.
She works with the public compliance with the American With Disabilities Act (ADA).
• Dr. Maila Coleman, pediatrician at West Kauai Medical Center/KVMH. Dr. Coleman trained initially at the Seattle Children’s Hospital then received extensive experience in Pediatric Medicine at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children.
• Kay Folmar, P.T.-received a B.A. in Psychology and a B.S. in Physical Therapy from the University of South Alabama and Furman University.
In addition to conducting NDT training courses throughout the U.S. and Canada, she has a private practice in Palm Desert, CA.
