The plight of Nene Hawaiian Geese is again being highlighted by a Maui organization.
The event is set for September 26 and is being organized by Gateway To Paradise, Inc., who is collaborating with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife.
The state Division of Wildlife estimates that there are now approximately 1,300 Nene Hawaiian Geese in the Hawaiian Islands including dozens on Kaua‘i.
The group is asking parents across Hawai‘i to purchase a $10 child-size Nene T-shirt to be worn September 24.
An essay contest is being held for high school students with a topic of how they would protect and preserve the Nene Hawaiian Goose. Also being held is a Web site contest for Elementary and Intermediate School students, and a coloring contest for Grade Schools.
