Four juveniles were arrested last week for criminal property damage and fireworks violations after a large brush fire involved about 50 acres in Koke‘e.
At 1:53 p.m. last Friday, a call came in that there was a large brush fire involving about three acres about one-half mile past “the mango tree” on the Waimea side of Koke‘e Road.
The first units responded and were at the scene at 2:20 p.m., said Cyndi Mei Ozaki, county public information officer.
Additional units had to be called to assist, with responses from Kaua‘i Fire Department units from Waimea, Hanapepe and Koloa, as well as Chief Dennis Furushima, acting Battalion Chief Edson Martin, and the Inter-Island Helicopters craft. A Gay & Robinson water tanker, to supply Inter-Island Helicopters’ Air-1’s water-drop efforts, was also used.
By the time the fire was brought under control, at about 9 p.m., KFD officials estimated an area of about 50 acres was involved, Ozaki said.
According to the Kauai Police Department daily log, four juveniles were arrested last Friday at 5:03 p.m. for first-degree criminal property damage, a class-B felony.
