Kaua‘i Cowboys look to lasso Kona
The Garden Island
The Kaua‘i Cowboys semi-pro football squad faces a tough Kona Razorbacks team in a semi-final match-up of the Hawai‘i Football League playoffs on Saturday at Vidinha Stadium. The gates will open at 6:00 p.m., with the kick-off going on at 7:00 p.m.
The Razorbacks are the only squad this season to defeat the number-one-seeded Maui Stars. The Cowboys are 1-1 this season against Kona with a loss coming in the first game of the season in Kona. Kaua‘i avenged the loss with a win against the Kona squad in the latter part of the season.
With a win over Kona, the Cowboys will earn a spot in the Hawai‘i Football League title game, which could be held at Vidinha Stadium, if Maui falters in their semi-final contest.
Kaua‘i’s Kua represents Hawai‘i, Baab repeats
Lihu‘e’s TJ Kua will head to Ardmore, Oklahoma later this month to compete in the 2004 Big “I” Independent Insurance Agents Championships.
The national tournament, with a total of more than 10,000 players in the field, used the Callaway’s final single round score to complete the qualifier for the largest tournament in the nation. Kua is representing the boys from Hawai‘i and Kelly Nakashima is the girls representative for the Aloha State.
Meanwhile, Kaua‘i’s Allan Baab defended his title at the 2004 Callaway Hawai‘i State Junior Championships in the 15-18 division, shooting a 69-79-148, four-over par. Other Kaua‘i notables included, Cory French, who tied for fourth-place with a 76-77-153, along with Kellen Watabu, who shot a 73-80-153.
On the girls side for the 15-18 division, Kaua‘i’s top finisher was Shelcie Takenouchi, who finished in seventh-place with a 81-78-159. Mary Akutagawa scored a ninth-place finish, shooting a 77-83-160.
