MANA — Drag racing really brings the kid out of you, but this past weekend at Kaua‘i Raceway Park, it was a family affair that stole the show, as Wayne Costa and son, Sheldon Costa both took home victories in the Garden Island Racing Association’s 31st Annual Independence Day drag races. Sheldon, though was able to one-up his dad with another win on the second race day.
On Saturday night racing began with 69 cars, including a win from Costa, who cut a .582 light to take the Quick 8 bracket in his D. & W. Services 1968 Chevy Camaro, dialing in at 8.99 running 8.997 at 149 mph. Ralph Villabrille in his 23T Roadster took 2nd on a red light. In the Junior Dragsters, Sheldon Costa took 1st place, with Cohlton Riskas placing 2nd, but the young Costa boy wasn’t done for the weekend as he took home top honors for the second straight night in his D. & W. Services Junior Dragster.
