Thanks to the Kaua‘i police, firefighters, conservationists, surfers, swimmers, etc. for their concern and possibly their saving of the melon headed whales at Hanalei last weekend. I did not get to Hanalei, but have had some experience with this species. Make no mistake – when such an oceanic species comes into shallow water, they are stessed, in spite of outward appearance of normality. It will probably remain unknown if the Naval exercise offshore drove the whales in, or if the reverse hukilau actually helped, but what is known is that when “blackfish” come so close inshore, a mass stranding is usually imminent and not reversible – disasterous to whales and County. Why such dolphins commit suicide is basically unknown to science. In spite of the name, the melon headed whale, the literal translation of their scientific name, is actually a kind of dolphin. They are rare enough to not really have a common name, except “blackfish.”

I was quite disappointed to see that rather than express outrage that R.J. Reynolds company has stolen our island’s beautiful name to advertise their Camel cigarettes that bring death, disease, and addiction The Garden Island chose instead to give them some free front page advertising for their deadly product.
One thing we can say for sure about the product, it will cause cancer, stroke, heart attack, lung disease, premature babies, miscarriage and may other afflictions. Way to go.
