KAPA‘A — When the final buzzer belted across Kapa‘a High School Gym, the only sound that remained was from the roar behind the Kilauea Hui bench as they outlasted the Westside Hornets in overtime, 42-38 in the girls 14-and-under KYBA championship yesterday.
Kirstie Daly came up big throughout the game, but her biggest bucket of the afternoon came with just a couple of ticks left on the clock to tie the contest up and send both teams into an extra session.
Daly’s three-point bomb in overtime also gave the Hui the lead for good, at 37-36.
In other action, Wailua I came in third and beat the Kaumakani Supersonics with a score of 37-25. Jondi Das led Wailua with 14 and Sera “not Shera” Pascual added seven for the Supersonics.
In the KYBA Goodwill Tournament, Kalaheo and Tab “The Machine Gun” Matsumoto’s 13 points was enough for the 53-47 win over Waimea.
Brendan McDaniels poured in 22 points for Waimea.
The Piopio Bears destroyed Kapa‘a, 64-27. Gilbert Gutierrez and Jon Moniz notched 11 points each for the Bears.
Tom Patch and Mike Lindsey slammed home six markers for the losers.
The Westside Klowns took care off Lihu‘e, 38-20 in boys 19-and-under action at Kalaheo Gym on Thursday.
The Westside Hornets came away with the victory against Wailua, 33-28 in a girls 19-and-under game.
In games from Friday, the Lihu‘e Raiders beat the Kaua‘i Fire Raiders, 39-14. Cherisse Rapozo netted 15 points for the Raiders. Sanoe Keliinoi scored six for the Fire Raiders in girls 19-and-under action at Kalaheo Gym.
Waimea took care of Kapa‘a, 34-21 with 10 points from Brendan McDaniels. Mark Brewer and Devin Saiki each scored six points for Kapa‘a.
The Piopio Bears ran past Kalaheo, 47-39 behind 13 and 12 points from Kyle Santos and Aukai Wong. Tab Matsumoto scored 13.
