KALAHEO — The Lihu‘e Comets clinched the championship of the KYBA 12 Under Girls basketball program, and Wailua nailed down the third place slot, but not before giving fans more than their money’s worth of competition and sportsmanship Wednesday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
With the clock showing ten ticks remaining, the Comets’ deft passing kept the sphere just out of reach of the Kaumakani Supersonics to outlast the Westside girls, 34-32 for the 12 Under Girls championship.
Earlier in the evening, the absence of the Westside Hornets’ key low posts saw the smaller team wilt under the shade of Wailua’s Das sisters, Jondi and Jodi who dominated the inside game, and under torrid defensive pressure, took third place with a 26-16 win.
