I am writing after reading the enclosed article on traffic. I am a retired businessman living on an island in Seattle, Wash. I was here on vacation and stopped at an activity center down in the north part of island. After asking them where I could see a beach and the water, they directed me down a side road. I fought my seat belt and got it on and drove down. At the end of road, I was not sure where, and I saw couples walking off to the side. So, I stopped the car, got out and asked them. They told me to turn at the corner, about 25 feet ahead. I got back into car and fought the seat belt again. I have to admit being a rental car and myself a very large man, it is hard to get buckled. At the corner as I made a turn, blue lights came on and the buckle snapped into place.
The policeman said I didn’t have it on at exactly the moment he saw me. He did say that he believed me that I always buckle up at home. Naturally receiving this ticket spoiled my looking at the ocean so I turned around and here the police car was pulling between two other white cars so he really had a trap there.
The small things that probably aren’t important are. 1.- rental car I’m not used to, 2.- out of state and didn’t know about the ticket drive, 3.- we do contribute to island economy, 4.- speed trap as mentioned, 5.- and mistake was made on the ticket. Being the principle of the the thing,
I went to the courthouse and found the earliest I can go to court is tomorrow June 9th at 9 a.m. So I arranged to stay extra time, plus it cost $100 to change my plane time vs. $99 could have paid ticket. I’ve driven 50,000 a miles a year for 40 years and haven’t had any tickets.
I explained that to the policeman and he didn’t care and wasn’t very nice.

What happened?
What happened to us? What happened to the beautiful land? What happened to the friendly people? What happened to aloha? You call yourself Hawaiians? You are not Hawaiian, you do not care for our land.
You are not friendly to your neighbors.
You do not show aloha to others. You don’t care about yourself. You don’t care about what is pono for yourself. You call yourself Hawaiian?
You think talking pigeon and wearing surf shorts proves you’re Hawaiian? It doesn’t prove anything.
What ever happened? Where did we go wrong?
Why do we have to liter? That only proves that we are lazy and cannot walk to a garbage can. You want to be a true Hawaiian? You need to care for the land.
