Heavy showers, sometimes torrential, didn’t dampen spirits as the 2004 season of the Kauai Polo Club opened at Anini Field last Sunday with Hanalei Bay scoring a 7-3 victory over Savage Pearls in a four chukker match. Social members and visitors lined the field and filled the grandstand enjoying polo and tailgate parties despite the weather. Savage Pearls started the match with a one goal handicap.
Robin Savage tossed in the first ball to inaugurate the season and the first chukker. Very quickly, with superb horsemanship and great stick handling, Ronnie Tongg scored two goals for Hanalei Bay. Both teams moved up and down the field cautiously assessing their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses; but the period was dominated by Tongg and Max Secunda as they engaged in stick handling and riding each other off.
