KAPA‘A – They pride themselves on being disciplined and it showed all season long, especially in their final game of the season.
The Kawaihau Community Little League major’s champions for 2004, the Marlins, really looked like a champsionship team as they blanked the Yankees 4-0 on Thursday to complete a 10-1 title season.
“All season long, I just tell them to play as a team and we taught them discipline at the beginning of the season and they stuck with it all year long,” Marlins head coach Karl Kimura said.
The Kilauea/Princeville area team features six 12-year-olds that have been playing together since the minor leagues. The Marlins’ only loss came from the Phillies, who managed to get one past them to put a mark on an unblemised season.
The Marlins’ top hitters on the season include, thirdbaseman Rej Butac, pitcher Aaron Belmonte, catcher Kori Kimura, firstbaseman Kelly Kokora, outfielder/catcher Kevin Cremer, and shortstop Roger Fu.
“It’s fun playing on this team, not only because we win, but because I like the boys and girls I play with,” pitcher Aaron Belmonte said.
As the game ended, the Marlins showed true discipline by not show boating and celebrating too much as they acted as if they were at that level of excellence before.
Up next is the selection of the 2004 Kawaihau Community Little League major’s all-stars.
