The voyaging canoe Hokule‘a departed Hanalei Bay Sunday morning bound on an environmental research project in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands with a first stop at Nihoa Island.
The crew of 13 departed at about 9 a.m. Onboard is Kaua‘i Community College instructor Dennis Chun and Jan TenBruggencate of the Honolulu Advertiser, who is a resident of Lihu‘e and the environmental writer for the newspaper.
The Polynesian Voyaging Society said the voyage is aimed at bringing “attention to the much healthier condition of the coral reefs and ecosystems there.”
