RENO, Nev. – The University of Hawai‘i baseball team (29-20, 12-12 WAC) fell to the Nevada Wolf Pack (29-25, 13-12) 17-10 in front of a crowd of 1,130 at Peccole Park Friday, thanks to an 11-run eighth inning. Darrell Fisherbaugh (0-3) took the loss while UN’s Patrick Mason (5-3) got the win.
Isaac Omura led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, a homer and a double. Andrew Sansaver added a 3-for-5 game with three RBI, two runs and a double. Nathan Thurber also homered, going 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Jaziel Mendoza was 3-for-6 with two runs and one RBI and Brian Finegan was 2-for-4 with a run.
The ‘Bows got on the board in the first as Mendoza drove in Finegan on a single over the Nevada shortstop, giving UH a 1-0 lead. Hawai‘i had a chance to add to the lead, but the Wolf Pack got out of the inning with a big double play, keeping the deficit at just one run.
But it wouldn’t last long as Nevada’s Joe Mercer blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning, making it 3-1.
The offense kept coming in the second as Omura and Thurber hit back-to-back home runs to right field, tying the game at 3-3.
Hawai‘i then took the lead in the third as Sansaver, Omura and Thurber drove in runs on three-straight plays, making it 6-3. But three-run leads don’t last long in Peccole Park, as the Pack came back with three runs in the fourth on home runs by Chris Gimenez and Erick Streelman, tying it again at 6-6.
Sansaver then drove in another run to give UH back the lead at 7-6, driving a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth. Hawai‘i had a chance to add to their lead in the sixth, but Pack reliever Patrick Mason came in and got two outs, leaving the ‘Bows with the bases loaded.
Nevada seemed to have tied the game on a sacfice fly in the bottom of the sixth, but the umpires ruled that the Pack runner on third base didn’t tag up, giving UH a 8-1-5 double play, to keep it at 7-6.
The Rainbows added to their lead in the eighth, scoring three runs on an RBI-single by Sansaver and a two-run double by Omura, making it 10-6.
But the Wolf Pack came back with their big inning in the eighth, scoring 11 runs on eight hits and two errors, giving Nevada the 17-10 final score.
UH will try to bounce back as they play Nevada again today at 1:00 p.m.
