LIHU‘E – Motiv8 (Boys Under 8) kept their unblemished record intact as Jacob Corpuz broke the plane with just ten ticks remaining in the second overtime of their Wednesday game against the Lihu‘e Tornadoes.
Working against a vocally supportive audience at the North Vidinha fields, Lucas Gushikuma broke the ice in the first half as he launched a bullet from about 15 yards out to cap a breakaway play and give the Tornadoes a 1-0 lead at the half.
A scuffle for ball control on the right side saw Edsel Lactaotao author a shot that squirted from the crowd and past the goalie for the 1-1 deadlock that forced the ovetime play.
Intense defensive play by both squads kept the fans alive, one parent commenting, “I hope it doesn’t go into shootout. I can’t take much more of this.”
Exchanging sides following the first five-minute OT, both squads resumed the defensive slugfest, but a second attempt by Corpuz in the waning moments capped the excitement as the goal slipped past the Tornado goalie for the win.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Cheetah Girls blanked the Chicks Who Rip (GU10) behind goals from Alexa Tamashiro and Siarah Perreira.
The nightcap saw the Blue Dolphins edge Ho‘olehua, 3-2 as Ho‘olehua failed to capitalize on some of their opportunities.
Awika Muragin notched two goals with Sanoe Souza adding another in the Blue Dolphin edge while Amber Thronas and Tori Shimabukuro accounted for the Ho‘olehua numbers.
Thursday afternoon’s solo Under 8 game saw the Chicks Who Rip shut out KSC, 1-0 as Leiana Alejandro scored the sole goal at the 18-minute mark of the first half.
Cedar Young of the KSC Panthers almost had a tie going, but with only one referee for the U8 games, an official call couldn’t be made as Young’s shot was ruled a no-goal with nine minutes left in the game.
The first of two nightcap games saw the U12 Chicks Who Rip blank Motiv8, 4-0 with all the Chicks’ goals coming in the first half led by Skye Shimabukuro notching a pair of goals with Airelle Dorsey and Kylie Taniguchi adding a goal apiece in the win.
Daven Bodano had the only score of the night as Motiv8 (BU-12) shut down the Hanalei Titans, 1-0 in Thursday night’s finale.
The final score was no indication of how the game actually went as Westside United fell to the Hanalei Titans 3-0 (BU-10). Ranson Camat came up big for the Titans with two goals. Teammate Cory Candelaria scored the third goal for Hanalei.
Titan head coach Tom Candelaria praised both teams for playing good defense.
“There was great defense in this game and for us, Pierce Murphy and Max Bender were outstanding,” Candelaria said.
This makes it five championships in a row for Candelaria, who heads off to Idaho and loves the way he ended his coaching career.
In a shocking upset, KSC-North upended the Blue Dolphins 1-0 (GU-14) to take home the championship bowl Friday night. Jocelyn Enrique came up with the only goal of the competition that proved to be the game winner.
KSC-North head coach Gwen Tamura acted sensei-like after the game by being humble.
“We came out tonight and played as a team, but they (Blue Dolphins) played tough and it was a lot of fun to be a part of this one,” Tamura said.
The Blue Dolphins came close to scoring, as Kayla Kitabayashi kicked one that nearly went into the goal early in the first half. Sanoe Souza played her heart out all night and came close to netting a goal a couple of times.
On the defensive side, the KSC-North squad were led by the great play of Tasha Pigao, who was all over the field, making it hard for the Blue Dolphins. KSC-North goalie Kyah Schneider made key saves all night to blank the opposition.
In the final contest of the evening, Motiv-8 came out strong and scored early against KSC-Gremio (BU-14) to put them up 1-0 in the first half. Mike Chamblain notched the first goal of the night. Ikaika Fuerte scored for Motiv-8. Tony Braverman punched in the lone goal for KSC-Gremio.
In the end however, Motiv-8 won the title by a score of 2-1.
