WAILUA — Wailua Golf Course will be the site of the 2004 Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association (HHSAA)/David S. Ishii Foundation state golf championships that will kick off on Wednesday morning from 7 a.m.
A field of 66 golfers will converge from high schools throughout the state for the 36-hole medal play and low individual gross competition that will be governed under rules of the United States Golf Association.
The Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation (KIF) will be represented by the Kaua‘i High School girls team that will be supplemented by a pair of individualists.
Red Raider co-captain Jennie Pleas and Kiilani Matsuyoshi will anchor the team of four including Shelcie Takenouchi and Miki Ueoka.
Joining the quartet will be two individualists, also from Kaua‘i High School. Kimberly Yama and Mary Akutagawa, the KIF individualist champion who touts an 82.6 scoring average will be the KIF individualists competing in the state competition.
The OIA will be fielding the largest number of golfers at 27 followed by the ILH who will have 11 golfers competing.
The BIIF will field 14 golfers with the MIL sending eight followed by the six from the KIF.
Among the 2004 field will be the top individualists Amanda Wilson of the Big Island who finished at 158 following two rounds, Mari Chun of Kamehameha who netted a 144 after two rounds, Kelly Nakashima of Baldwin High who closed with a 311 after four rounds, and Brittney Choy of Leilehua who showed a 144 after two rounds.
The HHSAA girls team championship was won by Hilo in 2003, the Vikings closing with 444 after 36-holes at the Waikoloa Beach course. In 2002, Waimea took the title at the Hawai‘i Prince course.
Kaua‘i High School, anchored by Rachel Kyono, took the state title in 2001, the same year that Kyono took the state individualist title, finishing with a 143 (72-71) in a deadlock with Merynn Ito of A‘iea at the Ka‘anapali South course.
Individualist honors went to Kira-Ann Murashige of Hilo in 2003, and Leah Whiting of Waiakea in 2002.
Some of the early arrivals will be participating in a Tuesday practice round starting at noon.
Thursday’s finals will also tee off from 7 a.m.
There is no admission fee for viewing the competition.
