County computers went mostly unused Monday and Tuesday, due to a worm that infected the system.
While most of the computers that have a direct effect on service to the public, including those of the Kaua‘i Fire Department and Kaua‘i Police Department, were the first priority to be scanned and cleared, many of the behind-the-scenes computers remained shut down Tuesday night, said Cyndi Mei Ozaki, county public information officer.
Police and fire public response was not affected at all, she said.
The worm, Ozaki said, does not erase data, but slows the computers down, making them useless.
The worm can latch on to any computer on the network that is on, so the computers have to be shut off until the county’s information technology personnel could scan them, Ozaki said last night.
“It’s amazing how dependent (everyone) is on computers,” said Ozaki.
