It doesn’t come as a surprise that with a new job, along with it comes the excitement and anticipation of the same feeling when you step inside a new car and that familiar “new car” smell tantalizes your senses. For me, the job as The Garden Island’s Sports Editor does a lot more. It allows me to place myself in a new car, but a familiar one. That’s because, I was once a little sports feign as a youngster. I was the one looking to see if my picture or name made it into The Garden Island, along with many of my friends. I remember during high school when I was a member of the Kaua’i High School basketball squad, my teammates and I used to wait until after midnight to see the article about our team and to see who made the headlines and who were in the photograhs. This event usually took place at the Lihu’e 7-Eleven and the clerk eventually remembered our names and the reason why we stopped by so early in the morning.
This kept me on the right track, not the 7-Eleven stops, but the basketball part because it gave me self-confidence, determination, and many more of life’s lessons, all on the basketball court. However, more importantly it helped me establish a lifestyle away from other tempations that have claimed many of our youths growing up. It also allowed me to find ways to work with other individuals who also enjoyed playing sports. I think it is imperative when you’re growing up to connect with friends who will compliment your life, instead of leading you off-track and this is the main reason why sports plays such a huge role in our community.
