WAILUA — The Kaua‘i High School boys and girls team soared to the top of the KIF golf program Saturday at the Wailua Golf Course as the Red Raider boys filled in the top seven slots enroute to taking the team division over Kapa‘a and Waimea.
In the girls competition, Kaua‘i was the only school to field a girls team, but with just Robyn Nakata golfing from Waimea, took the girls team championship.
Allan Baab led the field shooting a 70 (34-36) with Kula’s Sean Ogawa filling in the eighth berth with a 77 (41-36) to tie with Abraham Akutagawa, seven strokes off the pace.
Waimea’s Noel Torres followed in tenth place, finishing with a 78 (38-40) to tie with Kaua‘i’s Nikko Tacsiat.
However, the Menehune’s next golfer, Markland Soliva came in at 19th overall to give second place to Kapa‘a who filled in the 12th and 13th slots overall with A.J. Basuel and Jet Levinthol topping the Warrior golfers with identical scores of 81.
In the girls’ competition, Kaua‘i’s Mary Akutagawa topped the field with a 79 (41-38) followed by co-captain Jennie Pleas who finished a stroke back at 80. Shelcie Takenouchi filled in the third place at 81 followed a stroke back by Mackenzie Ajimura closing with an 82.
This Saturday, May 1, the KIF golfers take to Wailua Golf Course for the final time before the state competition comes to Wailua, this outing to determine top individualists. The first group is scheduled to tee off starting at noon.
