Bettering the second-place squad by 23 points, members of the Kapa‘a High School Junior ROTC team won a statewide competition for the second year in a row.
Members of the Kapa‘a High School Junior ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) squad dominated the five-day camp and competition at Schofield Barracks on O‘ahu, scoring 100.25 points.
Those squads trailing the Kapa‘a High School cadets, in places second through sixth, only mustered between 72 and 77.25 points.
Kapa‘a High School’s Warrior Battalion was represented by 17 female and 14 male cadets, and competed in a variety of events against 18 other high-school units including Kailua, Kahuku and Roosevelt.
Lt. Col. Ralph Simmerman, the district Army instructor, welcomed the participants, and outlined the four days of training and competition, including the leadership reaction course, medical stakes (first aid), drownproofing, rappelling, obstacle course, physical training test, and a “mystery event,” after unit members set up their tents and cots and settled into their temporary living quarters.
“Group 1 (Kapa‘a High School) won first place by working and bonding together,” said Col. Jerald G. Knudsen (U.S. Army retired), senior Army instructor and advisor of the Kapa‘a High School JROTC.
“Team work and understanding what the standards are were key factors within their victory,” he said.
Outstanding individual performances were turned in by Cadet Lt. Col. Adam Campbell, who with Cadet 2nd Lt. Laura Beland gave a first-aid class on chest wounds.
