Hawai‘i Tourism Authority
The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) launched a new business information Web site, intended to provide information on meetings, conventions and various developments around the state. It combines content from key public and private sector entities. It also focuses on emerging industries such as biotech, medical research and how to start a new business. Links to Hawaii Visitor and Convention Bureau’s meetings site, Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism’s site and others enhance the site. Go to www.hawaiiworks.com.
Alexander & Baldwin posts 54 percent profit
Alexander and Baldwin Incorporated is reporting an earnings increase of 54 percent in the first quarter. The company cited increased investments and Hawaii’s favorable real estate market. The parent of Matson Navigation Company says net income increased to $27.1 million from 17.6 million a year ago. Revenue grew $26.2 percent to $344.9 million.
Allen Doane, president and chief executive officer of A & B, says the performance of Matson, A&B’s ocean transportation division, was in line with expectations, but that its real estate business had exceptional performance.
Special Olympics gets $25K
Kaua‘i Special Olympics athletes have something to smile about. On April 18 at the 2004 Kaua‘i Special Olympics Golf Tournament at Puakea Golf Course in Lihue, $25,500 was raised for local Special Olympics atheletes.
“We set our goal at $10,000. In order for our Kaua‘i representatives to attend statewide events, we need to raise $60,000 annually. This event alone has brought in almost half of what we need,” said Jocelyn Freitas, executive director for the Kaua‘i Special Olympics.
The event was sponsored by the Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort where 128 golfers competed in a shotgun tournament followed by a luncheon and silent auction.
New businesses: Cosco Inc.
Cosco, Inc. opened last week. Cosco is an air conditioning and refrigeration supply company in Lihue owned by Bobbie, Cindy and Matt Cosco. They carry a full line of products. In fact, they say the are the leading supply house in the Islands. The store is staffed by Len Atkins and Nardo Nacnac. They’ve been in business on O‘ahu, Maui and the Big Island for many years and are proud to serve Kaua‘i. Open from 7 to 5 pm M-F and 7 to 1 pm Sat. The store is located at 1885 Haleukana Street in Lihu‘e.
Cleaning service
There’s a new house and condo cleaning service in town. Howell’s Cleaning service, run by husband and wife team Debbie and Rod Howell, from Oregon. The Howell’s have been in the cleaning business for 18 years.
Driving school
Wilson Driving School, LLC, servicing teens and adults. Randall Ioane Wilson and Cherie-Amore Wilson are a brother and sister team servicing Waimea, Lihue and Kapa‘a. Randall is a professional CDL driver for United Parcel Service and Cherie worked for the Department of Education for 12 years.
Wellness therapy
Janee Marie Taylor opens her Hawaiian Breathing wellness therapy today at St. Raphael’s from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Her technique, called “Haho‘omana,” means “to breath correctly” and is an ancient way of helping one’s body heal and sustain itself through increasing oxygen intake. Reservations 742-5008.
