Following bouts with trying to get games squeezed in between rain squalls, the Kaua‘i Inline Hockey Association finally got their champions over the weekend at the YMCA hockey playoffs.
Dr. Burnison’s Hot Shots took two games over the top-seeded Papaya’s Piranhas to capture the Squirt division.
Tyler Dora came out on top with a strong showing by goalie Chad Dorman who made a crucial Hot Shot save in the second sudden-death shootout.
Cascade Mayer stalemated the second match 2-2 early in the second period with Marcus Punua scoring the decider for the Hot Shots with nine minutes left to play.
Dora left the Hot Shots in the playoffs with seven goals with Kawai Peahu adding a pair of scores. Mayer finished with four goals for the Piranhas.
The Kamaaina Kreations Sharks roared from third place in the regular season Bantam division to blaze through the playoffs led by Noah Murray with 16 goals and seven assists.
Black Gingerich added a dozen goals and four assists in the win.
Ikaika Fuerte led the Allstate Rangers who gave the Sharks a tough game before falling 12-9, Fuerte finishing with eight goals and three assists with Zeb Leech-Kritchman contributing six goals and two assists.
The Punua Insurance Na Ali‘i took the Midget division over the Southpaw Board Bangers in the championship game, 5-2 behind the scoring of Keala Davis who finished with two goals and four assists.
Matt Punua added four goals with outstanding play from goalie Travis Taketa.
Tyson Wakayama paced the Board Bangers with seven goals.
With the championships settled, Kaua‘i will field five teams in the upcoming Regional Championships which will be held in Kona on June 11-14.
A new 8-Under division will be added to go along with the 10-Under, 12-Under, 14-Under, and 17-Under teams.
Kaua‘i has historically done well at these regionals with the 17-Under group winning the title for eight of the 9 years the regionals has played.
