Tyler Yates notched his fourth win of the KIF baseball season in game one as he allowed just two hits in going the distance for the Raider win.
Yates finished the contest with no runs allowed, no walks issued, and struck out eight Waimea batters in the win.
KIF scorekeeping ‘Coach’ Glenn Mickens noted, as he poured over the stats, “He pitched a gem of a game, today.”
Shawn Yadao, the Menehune starter in game one, suffered the loss.
Sam Dias and Shannon Oketani led the Raiders who finished with eight hits in their 10 runs, Dias and Oketani each driving in a pair of runs.
But, Waimea, who has been grappling with lineup adjustments with the season-ending injury to shortstop Isaac Castillo, and the departure of some players, roared back in the second contest behind Robbie Correa for the 9-0 shutout.
Correa, who picked up the win on the pitcher’s mound with no runs allowed the Raiders finished with five hits while walking one and fanning a trio of Kaua‘i batters.
A two-RBI homerun was also added to his credit as he joined Leonard Zalopany in leading the Menehune bats to the second game shutout.
Shannon Oketani was strapped with the loss in game two, sharing the mound with Jake Oketani and Garen Itamura.
With the Saturday split, Kapa‘a holds the reins to Round two as they prepare to host the Raiders on Wednesday for a single afternoon game at the Ron Martin field.
Kapa‘a, who also is making lineup due to several missing players, holds a 2-1 second round standings following their 7-6 marathon win over Waimea last Wednesday in a ten-inning affair.
Kaua‘i High School is 2-2 in the second round, and needs a win to regain the lead slot — a loss at the hands of the Warriors would bring a tie for the lead as the KIF season enters its final leg of the second round Wednesday.
The Raiders had earlier clinched the first round with a 5-1 record.
Waimea, who definitely got a morale boost with the win over the Raiders in Saturday’s game two now knows that a win is still possible. The Menehune hold a 1-2 second round standing.
Following the Wednesday matchup, Kapa‘a makes the trip out to Hanapepe on Saturday for a double-header, and Waimea visits Vidinha Stadium the following Wednesday for the final regular season contest.
Game time Wednesday is 2:45 p.m. with KQNG Am570 doing a live broadcast with Anahola Joel Pahukula doing the play-by-play.
