Who must live with Pay raise Decision?
In a front page article on April 15, the HGEA chief on Kaua‘i is quoted as saying that ‘Baptiste must live with pay-raise decision.’ He goes on to blame the mayor for not negotiating ‘in good faith’ following the initial excessive demands from the union. In reality, there was no possible way to ‘negotiate’ since the union knew that an impasse would lead to binding arbitration – and in this state arbitrators always favor the unions.
But the taunting epithet as to who ‘must live with this greed’ is sadly misplaced. It is we the taxpayers who must live with it by paying higher taxes – both directly and in higher prices as businesses must charge more to cover their tax burdens. It is interesting that this article appeared on the day when we are all reminded of how much taxes that we already pay. Many here on the island are barely making it as it is.
I guess the concept of ‘I got mine – to heck with anyone else’ is alive and well.
