Traffic woes
My husband and I have visited Kaua‘i several times since our first trip in 1978. Of course, we think of Kaua‘i as “Heaven on Earth” — perfect weather and easy-going lifestyle. We appreciate the fact that the citizens have tried somewhat to hold back the expansion of tourism to the point of it being like Waikiki where there is no room to breath.
We were, however, astounded at the changes in the car traffic since three years ago. We always stay on the Lihu‘e side and it was bumper to bumper traffic from morning until night. I did hear that there has been talk of another route mid-island. Is that the answer? I wonder whether it is really necessary for every tourist to have car. I think the better answer would be for the Hotels to have a mini-bus or whatever at the disposal of their paying customers to take them to other areas on the Island, or for dining somewhere else.
It seems ludicrous for such a small island to have thousands of cars running around all day. It must be extremely frustrating for the people trying to run a business and answer service and delivery calls.
I suppose a super highway down the middle of the island would do the trick, but then you would have to destroy more beautiful land. Perhaps a streetcar line along the existing highway where people could jump on and off to go to different areas.
We did rent a car this time, but once we saw all the traffic, we were sorry we had done that. Next time, we will stay put in our own area, and maybe book a car now and then, if there are no alternate choices. We use to walk around Lihu‘e a little more, but the traffic is a little intimidating even for that.
In the end result, we love Kaua‘i, and will be back.
