‘ELE‘ELE — The timing couldn’t have been better as a dozen coaches and some athletes from Waimea High School athletic department took up their posts for the McCoaches night event at the ‘Ele‘ele McDonald’s on Wednesday afternoon.
The KIF baseball game at Hanapepe Stadium was winding out, people’s appetites were whetted from the 6-5 come-from-behind Menehune victory, and the beneficiary would be the Menehune athletic program.
Shawn Yadao, the Menehune’s starting pitcher in their season opening victory, was already into enjoying his post-game meal as were several parents of players all donning the Waimea blue.
James Kitamura, Waimea’s athletic director, is a familiar face behind the food booths at numerous Menehune home games, and on Wednesday, headed up the crew of coaches and athletes as they checked and double-checked orders from visitors and residents alike, many of whom came especially to see the coaches in action behind the counters and on the prep table.
The McCoaches program is designed after the McTeachers program that was recently hosted by the Lihu‘e McDonald’s, and instead of teachers, it was athletic department personnel manning the counters for a percentage of the proceeds during the 5 to 8 p.m. ‘shift.’
The highlight of the evening came with the arrival of new baseball coach Nelson Mendonca and his family who came to join the crew and celebrate their first victory of the 2004 KIF season.
