Seasiders wahine sweep Vulcans
LA‘IE, O‘ahu — The top-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i women’s tennis team swept the University of Hawai‘i-Hilo Monday, 9-0, improving to 7-0 for the season.
The Seasiders lost only five games in the three doubles matches, and just nine games in the six singles matches in winning their 73rd consecutive dual match.
Jing Jing Liu and Amy Sun each scored 6-0, 6-0 wins at number two and number five singles respectively. Sun teamed with Judy Weng, a 6-0, 6-1 winner at number four singles, to shutout the Vulcans, 8-0, at number two doubles as well.
Adrienn Hegedus matched Weng’s singles score at the number one spot for the Seasiders and teamed with Liu for an 8-1 victory at number one doubles.
The Seasiders will face Division I St. Louis on Wednesday afternoon.
Point Loma Nazarene sweeps BYUH
LA‘IE, O‘ahu — A two-run seventh inning home run combined with a pair of Seasider errors as Point Loma Nazarene swept a doubleheader softball series over the Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i women’s softball team Monday.
Despite a strong pitching performance from Brooke Hilton, the Seasiders dropped the second game, 2-0. The BYUH women suffered a 7-5 loss in the first game.
BYUH’s Echo Hatch continued her streak of tough luck on the mound in the first game, Hatch suffering her fourth time this season with all four losses coming in the opposing team’s final at bat.
A pair of Seasider errors led to three unearned runs off Hatch and BYUH lost despite outhitting the Lady Crusaders, 13-12. Amanda Nino, Shea Seever, and Mandy Kirkham each collected three hits for the Seasiders.
Hilton allowed just a pair of unearned runs in the first inning of the second game before shutting down Point Loma on two hits the rest of the way. Hilton struck out seven of the Lady Crusaders, but the Seasiders managed just four singles off sophomore Kelly Kalish and never got a runner past second base.
With the loss, the Seasiders fall to 7-10 for the season, and will face Chaminade on Saturday in La‘ie in a conference doubleheader starting at noon.
