LIHU‘E — It was coincidence that the No. 1 and No. 2 teams would meet on the field for the final game of the Lihu‘e Baseball League Pinto finale.
Parents filled the fenceline along the firstbase and thirdbase line as well as behind the backstop while the two teams, the Cardinals in their scarlet tops and the Mariners in their dark blues took to the field.
Banking behind a homerun from Shane Iwata, the Cardinals relied on their big bats to break a 2-2 stalemate to clinch the title, 5-3 Friday afternoon, the Cardinals driving three runs across the plate in the fourth inning.
Iwata scored twice in the win as well as delivering the long ball over left-center.
Mikal Moranz came through on an early in-the-park homer while Michael Curnan and Kawai Ika Punua also notched runs for the victorious Cards.
Kaimana Wilson, Pono Tokioka, notched early scores for the Mariners who saw Devon Ferreira cross in the fifth inning, but the effort fell short.
Team members of the victorious Cardinals include Moranz, Jordan Florence, Trey Smith, Iwata, Punua, Curnan, Tyler Manibog, Danasia Banks-McFadden, Reggie McFadden, Kealoha Ota, and Grant Basquez.
The Cards are coached by Kaleo Smith, Cris Manibog, Gerald Basquez, and Kepa McCarthy.
