KALAHEO — Out-heighted? Is there a word like that?
“Look at them mices,” coach Peter Rayno of the Lihu‘e Lakers chuckled as his team held nothing back trying to stop the Waimea 2nd to None team as the county’s 12 Under basketball program entered its final days of the 2004 season.
“I don’t have any 12’s,” Rayno said following their game against Waimea. “They’re all coming back next year. The Lakers are all 10’s and 11’s.”
But, that didn’t stop the aspiring hoopsters who, despite being held to just three points in the first half, came out firing, finishing the game with 19 points in their loss to Waimea, 40-19.
Hank Ibia topped the Lakers scoring with six points, including a trey, and the crowd at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center erupted in cheer as the Lakers saw their only second half field goals come from three-pointland, Makana Waipa, Caneen Higa, and Travis Taylan joining Ibia in racking up treys.
Dayton Bayot topped the Waimea scoring with 11 points in the win Wednesday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Kauasi Lomu, John Delos Santos, and Timothy Teves led Wailua to a 6-0 third period over the Kalaheo 76ers, but the effort fell short as the 76ers took a 44-28 win out the door.
Kea Lopez finished the night with a game-high 16 points with Kekoa Prem adding 10 points in the win.
Teves topped the Wailua scoring with six points followed by Cody Abigania and Lomu each adding four.
In Kilauea, the Lihu‘e On Fire topped Gee ‘Magic,’ 54-27, Justin Ramos netting 16 points for On Fire while Pakeko Yasay finished with 11 markers for Gee.
Kyle VanBuskirk finished the night with 25 points for the Eastside, but the effort fell short as the Enforcers got 13 points from Kalapaki Ellis in their 35-32 win.
The girls took the floor on Thursday night in Kalaheo, as Ashlee Jimenez finished with eight points to lead Lihu‘e to a 22-11 showing over Kapa‘a who got seven points from AshLyn Lee.
The final game of the night had Jondelle Ipac netting 11 points to lead the Westside Hornets to a 28-15 win over the Lihu‘e Sparks who were led by Kelsey Cadiente’s six points.
