Kaua‘i resident Liko Martin, 58, pleaded no contest to second-degree criminal trespass in Kawaihau District Court Thursday for trying to reach Papa‘a Bay through Guber’s ranch at the Papa‘a Bay access “celebration.” He was sentenced to 30 hours of community service and ordered to pay court fees, said county deputy prosecutor Rosa Flores.
Three other Kaua‘i residents pleaded not guilty to trespassing charges for trying to enter the ranch during a dispute with police and the landowner’s lawyer over access rights to Papa‘a beach.
On Thursday, David Denson, Ka’iulani Edens-Huff, Evelyn de Buhr were arraigned and pleaded not guilty to second-degree criminal trespass relating to the “celebration” on December 28.
At that beach-access dispute, members of the community were turned away by at least 15 Kaua‘i Police Department officers, detectives, sergeants, and lieutenants for trying to use the beach. The four were arrested when they tried to push past the police.
