KAPA’A — Kapa’a’s Kapena Cummings scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Warriors’ JV squad to a 37-35 win Tuesday night to set the stage for the varsity showdown between the Warriors and Menehune.
Trailing by four points at the half, Kapa’a came alive in the second half as Cummings led the offensive with 12 of his game-total 15 points in that half, eight coming in the third frame when Kapa’a outshot Waimea 15-13.
As the clock wound down, a Warrior pick and feed to Kesmon Jaramilo deadlocked the contest 34-all with 3:30 remaining.
Waimea’s Brandon McDaniels who finished with top scoring honors for the Menehune JV, pulled the junior blue ahead on the tail end of a charity pair at the 2-minute mark only to have Junnel Calpito answer with another charity tail-ender to deadlock the contest.
Another Calpito split at the charity line pulled Kapa’a ahead, and with 11.8 seconds left in the contest, Angelo Luna went to the free throw line for the clincher after being fouled on a pick, Waimea’s shot attempt by Dana Tayco coming up empty at the buzzer.
Cummings topped the scoring with 15 points with Luna and Jaramilo each contibuting six points in the win.
McDaniels hit 13 points before fouling out, and Tayco added a dozen markers to lead Waimea.
