KAPA’A — Waimea’s Jeremy Manuel and Kamu Kawaihalau combined for 32 points to lead the Menehune to a 52-44 win over Kapa’a Tuesday night at the Bernice Hundley.
Warrior head coach Ed Phillips had a plan, “We’re going to give it all we got,” he said prior to the start of the game.
And, the plan almost worked as Waimea got bogged down, racking up three fouls and being held to just a bucket in the first six minutes of play while the Warriors notched an 8-2 run.
Adam A’ana and Max Hadwin broke open the Kapa’a run pulling to within two at the 1:18 mark.
Kapa’a’s Kaylan Dolor answered only to have Chad Barba, donning the blue suit for the first time this season, and Manuel lock up the contest 10-10 at the buzzer.
From that point, it was Waimea gradually increasing their lead, holding Kapa’a to just a pair of field goals from Ryan Cram who came off the bench in the second quarter while the Menehune went on to finish 12-8 for a 22-18 halftime bulge.
Fueled by seven points by Manuel, and six from Kawahalau, the Menehune outdistanced Kapa’a in the third quarter 16-8 only to have Kapa’a catch up in the final frame 18-14 behind six big points from Dolor and seven points from Cram before the tall man fouled out with a 14-point night.
Dolor finished with 10 points with Greg Ragsac and Amini Ta’ufo’pu each with nine.
Kapena Cummings had 15 points to lead the Kapa’a JV to a 37-35 win with Brandon McDaniels leading the Waimea effort.
