LIHU’E — Kapa’a High School came to play soccer Thursday.
The varsity boys broke open a 0-0 halftime stalemate to score three goals enroute to a 3-0 win.
Chris Almadova broke the book open at the 4:18 mark, scoring on a penalty kick that soared past the Kaua’i goalie before Almadova chested the ball into the net.
Blaine Baxter upped the Warrior ante at the 7:55 mark, scoring when the Kaua’i goalie fumbled the save.
Chasing two goals, the Kaua’i boys suffered another setback when Justin Toulon was issued a red card.
Lucas Brower iced the win for Kapa’a as he scored on a throw-in from Ryan Cram at the 28:26 mark.
Kaua’i continued to try and penetrate the Kapa’a defense, but fell short, their final serious goal attempt coming on a Chad Naganuma slider that rolled wide at the 32:54 mark.
Cards punctuated play in the intensive matchup, Kapa’a getting a pair of yellow matched by a pair by Kaua’i.
The Kapa’a win sat well with Waimea assistant coach Mark Kennett, who, at the 0-0 halftime, noted that a Kapa’a win or tie would keep everyone in the race.
Jackie Huttger was the focus of the supportive audience who cheered for a hat trick from the Warrior forward who notched two of their goals in the 2-2 tie.
Striking early, Huttger notched the ice-breaker at the 3:34 mark, floating one over two Kaua’i defenders and goalie Ashton Pigao.
The Raiders struggled to answer, Holly Iloreta finally striking on her third back-to-back corner kicks, the ball getting sandwiched between Stephanie Kashiwabara and the Kapa’a goalie before nestling in the net at the 9:53 mark.
Six minutes later, Kapa’a replaced their goalie for Erika Brewer after Iloreta struck again, this time on a second effort.
With a minute left in the half, Huttger pushed the tying goal over the Red Raider defense and goalie.
