LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders almost swept their series Saturday night against Kapa‘a, save for a loss suffered by their JV boys squad, 2-1.
The JV girls opened the afternoon with a 5-0 win over Kapa‘a, and the evening series saw the Kaua‘i varsity girls awaken in the second half to take their match, 2-0 with the varsity boys holding off a late Kapa‘a charge, 2-1.
Cards, yellow and red, flew in both boys games, and Red Raider JV coach Bill Lemke noted that they played through most of the second half with one player out due to a red card.
In the varsity boys contest, Kaua‘i was outmanned on the field with two of their players drawing red cards, and as the contest wound down, the Warriors also sustained a red card during a heated meeting at midfield.
Despite being outnumbered, and a heavy close quarter defense led by Warrior Waylon Sadang, the Raiders struck five minutes in the second half as Kaleo Baxter nailed a penalty kick followed less than five minutes later by a Kapa‘a PK attempt that failed.
The Raiders upped the ante at the 29-minute mark as Justin Kashiwabara challenged Kapa‘a goalie Alika Woodward and fired from inside the 18-yard mark for a point-blank goal that was answered late in the game as Kanoa Mayer scored in heavy traffic.
Earlier, Madison Perry broke the 0-0 girls’ stalemate at the 29:25 mark on a penalty kick with Janee Correia icing the win on a header of a Holly Iloreta cross from the sidelines with just 2:30 showing on the clock.
Kapa‘a’s JV boys scored twice while Kaua‘i notched their sole score from Frank Speetjens in the 2-1 loss.
Megan Vento, Clarissa Bolosan, Katie Anderson, Auika Muragin, and Corey Mann were the scorers in the Red Raiders JV girls’ 5-0 win.
The next KIF soccer matchup will have Waimea travelling to Vidinha Stadium to match up against Kapa‘a on Saturday, Dec. 27.
JV games start at 1 p.m. followed by the varsity contests that start no earlier than 4:30 p.m.
