WAIMEA — The Kapa’a Warriors barely recovered from their opening night loss before being belted by Waimea on the opener of the KIF double-header Saturday.
Menehune pitcher Lynette Perreira worked both sides of the ball as she picked up the win with four walks allowed, but in the batter’s box, Perreira sprinkled the scorebooks with RBI in her perfect 5-for-5 outing.
The opener went to Waimea who marked in each of their four frames, the Menehune chalking up three runs before Perreira opened up with a single, her first of five.
Despite the 4-run deficit in the first frame, Kapa’a got hope in the second inning as Kennilyn Nakamura got aboard only to be cut down on a stolen base attempt with two outs, Shantel Wong suffering the same fate after getting aboard on a walk.
But, Waimea roared back with a 12-run inning as Moani Durant asserted the Menehune bats on a double to leftfield. Kodi Oyama walked, and the big bat of Nui Wong blasted a double to left-center, scoring Durant.
Daeleen Lazaro followed in the order with a 2-RBI double to score Oyama and Wong as the floodgates opened.
Kapa’a switched through three pitchers and a pair of catchers in an attempt at slowing the scoring in the contest shortened by the 10-run rule, but their moment of glory came in the fourth inning as thirdbase Nakamura quashed two Menehune baserunners on a smart field of a hard-hit Waimea ball.
Jackie Alapai, the losing pitcher in the first game, got aboard in the fourth, but was left stranded to keep the Warriors still looking for a score following two games.
Wednesday night should prove to be a pitcher’s duel as Waimea comes over to Isenberg Park where they will tangle with the Kaua’i Red Raiders starting at 5:30 p.m.
