LIHU’E — Waimea goalie Justin Estes saved the game for Waimea as the Kaua’i offense led by Cody Kimura peppered the goal as the minutes ticked down on their contest Saturday night at Vidinha Stadium.
But, when the final whistle blew, it was Waimea taking the win to the locker rooms behind the shot-saving of Estes complimented by a Joseph Mecham goal that came in the first half off a corner kick.
Throughout the contest, Estes made save after save of the Raiders’ shot-on-goal attempts while the defense led the booming kick aways by Kollin Morikawa kept pestering the Kaua’i efforts at trying to score.
Emma Makepa-Foley led the Kaua’i High School girls with two goals in the second half as the Red Raiders took a 5-0 win over Waimea in the nightcap.
Rachael Taira broke the ice at the 32-minute mark on an assist from Sierra Jansons-Dizon followed less than two minutes later by a goal from Holly Iloreta as her corner kick sailed past the save attempt of Waimea goalie Faa Taala for the 2-0 halftime reading.
Makepa-Foley notched the first of her two goals with a slider at the 15-minute mark of the second half, and followed that up with a challenge of the new Waimea goalie Karmen Rivel at the 19-minute mark.
Despite strong defensive efforts led by Menehune sweeper Tori Kagawa, the Raiders struck again as Jansons-Dizon iced the win taking a cross from Janee Correia for the final score.
