Will Squyres of Will Squyres Helicopter Service reported sighting what for him was the first humpback whale of the season.
Judging by the size of the endangered species, seen from his helicopter in waters near Kipu Kai, “it was an escort. I hope they’re back,” Squyres said.
The sighting was Friday afternoon shortly before dusk. The humpback whales come from the northern Pacific during the winter months to give birth to and raise calves in the warmer waters around the Hawaiian islands.
Heavy rainfall yesterday canceled all of Squyres’ scheduled flights from 1:15 p.m. on, he said.
