Christmas tree season officially starts Friday, as Home Depot, Big Save supermarkets, and Waipouli Variety (in Roxy Square, Kapa‘a) will all begin selling trees. Kmart and Wal-mart have already started putting out those special pines.
This year, its first Christmas in business, Home Depot is giving suggestions on how to pick the perfect tree:
Whether choosing a Douglas or Fraser fir, start with the “freshness test.” Spot a tree that is uniformly green, then pull a few needles, shake the tree and inspect the limbs. The needles should not pull or shake off easily, and they should be flexible, moist, sticky, and fragrant when crushed. Limbs should be strong enough to support lights and spaced to lend visual balance.
The butt end of the trunk should also be cut to promote water absorption and prolong its beauty and life.
