WAIMEA — A standing-room-only crowd watched anxiously as the winners of this year’s Annual Pop Warner Spirit and Cheer Competition were tabulated on Sunday afternoon at the Clem Gomes Gym.
The Kekaha Pop Warner Association was the big winner with two of their competing squads earning top awards with Koloa eking out a peewee top honor with a scant 1.84-point margin over the Kapa‘a Steeler squad.
The Kekaha Panthers’ junior peewee squad soared to a 75-point win in that division with the Lihu‘e Patriots JPW taking second and the Koloa Packers awarded the third place trophy.
Kekaha three-peated in the Midget division as the Charger pepsters nosed out the Koloa Raiders by just 1.5 points to take top honors in that division.
Five Kaua‘i Pop Warner districts sent squads competing in three divisions: junior peewee, peewee, and midgets with the top winners in each division earning a trip to Orlando, Florida where they will compete in the Nationals.
Second place winners are invited to participate in the Pop Warner Cheer Invitationals which is also held in Florida, but on a different date from the National competition.
In addition to the competitive numbers, the audience and young spiritsters were treated to special exhibition performances by the Waimea and Kaua‘i high school cheer squads, the Red Raiders outfitted in special camouflage Spandex outfits while they did a patriotic routine.
