Kamakakoa takes Kendall Pacific sailing canoe race

Marvin Otsuji, captaining the Kamakakoa, took the top slot of the recent Kendall Pacific sailing canoe race that started out at Kalapaki Beach and ended at the Waimea Plantation Cottages.

Steve Baker of Kilo Opua took second with the Maka Koa under Mike Kincaid finishing third.

Tom Boomer aboard the Waipualele was fourth, and Tui Tonga skippered by Jason Dameron rounded out the winners.

Alan Faye took first in the new Holopuni division which is a new class featuring 31-foot sailing canoes as opposed to the six-man 45-foot crafts.

The Holopuni designer-builder Nick Beck promised to captain one of these smaller canoes for the 2004 race.

The race was the final in a statewide series of races sponsored by the Aston Resorts.
