LIHU‘E — Students at Kaua‘i High School were released at 12:30 p.m. Monday following a morning on the campus that was troubled by a power shortage.
According to Linda Smith, the school’s principal, the root of the problem was caused by a Kaua‘i Island Utility Coop (KIUC) cable malfunction on Lala Road.
To resolve the problem, KIUC had to shut down power to the neighboring area, forcing the early shutdown of the campus.
Smith said the staff was greeted with a situation where some classrooms had lights while others had none, air conditioners and fans did not work, and some areas of the campus were totally without power. Phone and fax service was spotty, too, she said.
The state assistant superintendent of schools agreed to an early closure so the problem could be resolved.
Radio announcements were issued, and students with cellular phones were asked to call their parents to arrange early pickups.
Teachers were not dismissed early.
Smith said the campus will open for full operation this morning.
