Members of the Kaua‘i Community College (KCC) Fund Board joined KCC provost Peggy Cha as she accepted a check from Phil Scott representing the Distribution Committee of the Antone & Edene Vidinha Charitable Trust on Friday.
The Vidinha Charitable Trust was established to benefit the people of Kaua‘i. Funds from the grant help 70 students each year with tuition expenses at the Kaua‘i Community College.
The Trust has supported KCC since 1989 with contributions in the excess of $700,000.
Antone “Kona” Vidinha was the sheriff for the Koloa District, and later became Captain of Police when Kaua‘i centralized its law enforcement.
Vidinha served as Kaua‘i’s mayor from 1967-72. Edene was a teacher at Koloa School for 37 years.
The Vidinha’s generosity filtered through the community with their charitable giving. One of their favorites being a program for needy University of Hawai‘i students from Kaua‘i.
A Distribution Committee composed of Officers of the Trust was created to carry out the charitable intent of the trust.
By trust provisions, contributions are awarded in four major fields: churches on Kaua‘i; hospitals and health organizations which benefit the people of Kaua‘i; and educational scholarships to colleges and universities in the state of Hawai‘i going to deserving students from the island of Kaua‘i.
