Drowning likely cause of Florida woman’s death

A 69-year-old Florida woman was declared dead Sunday after being found floating face down in waters off Makua Beach in Haena. Drowning is suspected.

Beachgoers found the woman and pulled her out of the water, according to a report from the Kauai Fire Department. According to the KFD, bystanders performed CPR until lifeguards arrived.

Lifeguards Gavin Kennelly and Chris Simpson, posted at Kee Beach, responded to the incident.

The suspected drowning was reported to police at about 11:51 a.m. by American Medical Response paramedics stationed in Hanalei.

Paramedics pronounced the woman dead after consultation with an emergency room doctor at Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Lihue.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.
