Three surfers with Kaua‘i ties have leading roles in “Boarding House: North Shore,” a reality-TV special from Warner Bros.
The show is scheduled to air at 7 p.m. on Wednesday nights starting tonight for six consecutive weeks on KFVE-TV/WB out of Honolulu.
Mark Burnett, the producer of the popular “Survivor” TV-reality series is the creator of the summertime reality series.
The plot line of the show follows a crew of seven top professional surfers through a season of surfing competition on the North Shore of O‘ahu.
Footage was filmed last November and December during the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, focusing on a house located along the Pipeline-Sunset Beach stretch of the North Shore of O‘ahu.
The cast features Hanalei-raised big-wave surfer Danny Fuller, part-time Kaua‘i resident and former world pro surfing champion Sunny Garcia, and Myles Padaca, another surfer with Kaua‘i ties.
Along with three woman surfers and another male surfer, the crew of seven is the focus of the show. Action includes their interactions both inside and outside the house, their lives as surfers away from the competition scene, as well as during competition, and the roles they play in the world of surfing on the North Shore of O‘ahu.
The show takes an in-depth look at what makes a pro surfer, with a look at the life of each of the seven.
On Warner Bros.’ Web site for the series, Fuller, who started surfing at Hanalei as a child and is a long-term member of the Quiksilver surf team, explains how his surfing career started: “My mother wasn’t happy that I was coming here,” said Fuller, whose father is a lifeguard on O‘ahu’s North Shore. “But four years later (at age 19) she got to see me in the semis of the Pipeline Masters (the third leg of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing), so who was right?”
Garcia’s life is outlined on the Web site:
“He kept his promise and became one of the greatest surfers of all time. Garcia’s 17-year career catapulted him into the Top 10 in 1990 and he has remained there for the past 13 years. In that time, he has traveled to Indonesia, Europe, Tahiti, Australia, South Africa, Brazil and Japan. But to Garcia, who has homes on O‘ahu, Kaua‘i and in Encinitas, Calif., no place compares to the North Shore of O‘ahu, home of the Triple Crown and his favorite wave in the world – the “backdoor break” at Pipeline. “I’ve been traveling all my life. The only thing I want to do is get home,” says Garcia. “I live in California, but I appreciate how beautiful it is in O‘ahu.”
Myles Padaca holds a Vans Triple Crown title and tells on the show how he is using his surfing to provide for his family. He has a baby on the way, and a mortgage to pay on his home on the North Shore of O‘ahu. His competition surfing is featured in his segments, as well as the local-style lifestyle he lives.
