A 56-year-old man drowned at Waiohai Beach Sunday afternoon. Circumstances related to the drowning were undetermined at press time.
A call for assistance from the beach was made around noon. When fire department personnel arrived on scene, two lifeguards, Alan Yamagata and Roy Yamagata, were performing CPR on the 56-year-old victim, who was a visitor from Utah.
Paramedics from American Medical Response tried resuscitating the man, and CPR was continued on the way to the emergency room, but he was pronounced dead at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
While the popular South Shore beach does not usually experience dangerous ocean conditions, swimmers of all different skill abilities can be in the water there on any given day, said Kaua’i Fire Department Battalion Chief Bob Kaden said.
