Special masses and other gatherings are planned to formally say “aloha” to pastors of various Catholic churches on the island who have accepted new assignments on other islands or the Mainland.
The first celebration is for the Rev. Christopher “Chris” Keahi, SS.CC., pastor of Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo, who will become pastor of St. Michael Church in Waialua on Oahu effective Tuesday, July 1.
That event is set for Saturday, June 21, at 6 p.m. on the church grounds. Tickets are $5 per person, available after each mass at the church until this Sunday, June 15. After that, they will be offered to the public.
The aloha farewell celebration for the Rev. Felix Vandebroek, SS.CC., pastor of St. Raphael’s Church in Koloa, is set for Friday, June 27, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Kauai Resort in Poipu.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $7.50 for children under 12, and free to priests and religious, and are available now through Wednesday, June 18.
Vandebroek has been at St. Raphael’s for 24 years, and next year also celebrates his 50th year as a priest.
The three priests at St. Catherine Church in Kapaa are being reassigned effective Friday, Aug. 1, likely to Mainland parishes. They are the Rev. Bruce Lery, pastor; the Rev. Vincent Curtain, associate pastor; and the Rev. Patrick Coyle, pastor emeritus.
A special mass is planned for Sunday, July 27, at 3 p.m., with a celebration to follow, likely on the parish grounds.
