Invitational tourney starts June 12 at Kalaheo Center

KALAHEO — Boys 16 Under basketball teams from Kona, Kaimuki, Makakilo, and Ewa Beach will converge on the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center as they meet up with Kauai boys basketball teams in the 6th annual Kauai Invitational Tournament hosted by the Kauai Youth Basketball Association (KYBA).

Maynard Shea will pit his 14-Under Westside Hornets against the Kaimuki NJB Hawaii coached by Anne and Richard Miyasaka as the tournament kicks off June 12 starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.

Coach Clayton Tang of Ikaika will match up against Hot Sauce Kauai under the direction of Steven Matsumoto starting at 5:30 p.m. with Bill Lemke of the Lihue Five-O pitting his troops against Eugene Lapina’s Makakilo Knights at 6:30 p.m.

The final contest of the opening night will have the Kona Tigers under Terry Takata going up against the Puuloa Bandits coached by former Kauaian Ken Tangjian.

The championship of the 3-day tournament will be determined on June 14 starting at noon.

In 12-14 games played on Tuesday, the Lihue Maniacs beat Second 2 None 44-34 in boys 12 and under action.

Scot Sasan and Teila Huni scored seven points each for the Maniacs while Hino Kanahele added 12 points for Second 2 None.

In a girls 12 and under game, the Kaumakani SuperSonics edged Wailua 18-11. Lorrine Lagoc-Agrade poured in nine points for the Sonics while Emma Donigan scored eight for Wailua.

In a girls 14 and under contest, the Waimea Minihunes took a 30-18 decision over the Westside Hornets II.

Natalie Mata totaled eight for the Minihunes while Meredith Hudson scored seven for the Hornets.
