Kierra Barba notched 10 of her game-high 12 points in the first half as the Lihu’e Comets took an 12-4 halftime lead enroute to a 20-15 showing against Na Wahine as the Kaua’i Youth Basketball Association (KYBA) opened their summer season Monday night at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center.
But Na Wahine was not to be denied as they roared back with an 8-4 showing against the Comets behind four points from Shelcie Rapozo-Dela Cruz and a sole trey, the only one in the game, from Jazelle Balilea.
Kathleen Cadiente came off the bench to score four final stanza points to keep the Comets ahead of Na Wahine at the buzzer.
Rapozo-Dela Cruz topped Na Wahine scoring with six points in the loss.
Justin Ramos chalked up 10 points to lead the Lihu’e Comets to a 41-24 victory over the Lihu’e Maniacs in the finale as the Comets soared to a 10-2 opening frame behind field goals from Eric Onodera, Matt Koyama, and Aston Carbonel.
Trailing 10-19 at the half, the Maniacs roared back in the third stanza with a 9-11 showing behind four points from Kyson Curameng, but the effort could not be sustained as the On Fire sealed the win with an 11-5 final frame.
Ramos topped all scorers with ten points followed by Scott Taylor who finished with eight.
Jordan Tottori topped the Manics scoring with six points followed by a five-point showing from Curameng and Teila Huni.
