WAIMEA — Ashlee Vea scored a game-high 11 points and the Menehune girls basketball team outscored Kaua’i 32-19 in the final 24 minutes of action in winning 41-27 on Senior Night at Waimea High School on Saturday.
With the win, the Menehune (3-0 in the second round of the KIF) clinched a tie for the conference second-round title and can win it outright on Tuesday against Kapa’a (1-1 in the KIF).
Kaua’i led 9-8 after one quarter but failed to score a point in the next eight minutes of action. Waimea only tallied six in the period.
However, those six points gave the Menehune a comfortable 15-8 halftime edge.
The Red Raiders (0-3 in the KIF) played much more aggressively in the third quarter. Waimea, though, was too strong at both ends in outscoring them 12-10.
In the final period, the Menehune opened a 15-point edge enroute to the victory.
Janna Soto scored seven points for the Menehune while teammates Mallorie Hepa, Jessica Jacinto and Virginia Aguilar totaled four points apiece.
For Kaua’i, Kelly Dennis sank two 3-pointers to lead the scoring while Holly Iloreta added five points and Stephanie Kashiwabara added four points.
Before the game started, Waimea’s four senior players Charise Ponce, Lorraine Lagoc, Aguilar and Vea were honored.
In the JV contest, the Red Raiders continued their winning ways with a come-from-behind victory over Waimea 29-25.
Trailing 9-0 after one quarter, the Red Raiders closed the gap to 19-13 at halftime.
In the final quarter, Kaua’i outscored Waimea 11-4 to claim the win.
Mei-Ling Keopuhiwa totaled eight points for the Red Raiders while teammate Rachel Taira added six points.
Melissa Moreno and Tory Kagawa combined for 12 points for the Menehune.
Tuesday’s JV contest begins at 5:30 p.m.
