HANAPEPE – Starting pitchers Patrick San Nicholas and Alec Reichle were outstanding for their respective clubs on Thursday in the opening round of the Waimea baseball tournament.
However, the Leilehua defense behind San Nicholas made the necessary plays while Kaua’i’s defense couldn’t match the Mules.
The Red Raiders committed four costly errors behind Reichle and San Nicholas pitched a one-hit shutout in a 6-0 win in Hanapepe.
The Leilehua hurler yielded his only hit in the first inning when the Red Raiders had their best chance to score.
Kaua’i left two men on base in the frame.
The rest of the contest, San Nicholas did not allow a baserunner.
Reichle was equally impressive allowing just one hit in four solid innings.
Despite Reichle’s pitching performance, the Mules led 4-0 after four innings.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Mules jumped on the scoreboard as the Leilehua leadoff hitter reached base on the first Kaua’i error of the contest.
Later in the inning, Daylen Hale singled to left to give the Mules a 1-0 edge.
Leilehua scored three more in the fourth inning on an error, wild pitch and then a steal of home base.
Ricky Paderes added an RBI single while a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning finished the scoring for the Mules.
In other action in Hanapepe, Waimea beat Leilehua 5-0.
At the Waimea High field, Kahuku bested Kapa’a 3-2 and Waianae defeated Kaua’i 10-3.
