Wet Paint Studio Tours offers a new way of experiencing the creativity of the island, by introducing art lovers to the artists directly.
“Kaua’i has so much talent, and those artists are tucked into the nooks and crannies of the island,” said Tara Golden, who originally started artist studio tours in Sedona, Ariz.
“It’s great fun, and a unique experience, to take visitors into their world,” said Golden.
Each three-hour tour takes participants into three artists’ studios. Artists discuss background, inspiration, challenges and techniques, as well as demonstrating different stages of the creative process.
Renowned artists happily open studio doors for tours, including Sally French, known for cutting-edge comic parody, and A. Kimberlin Blackburn, recently honored by the Contemporary Museum, Golden said.
Kathy Cowan shows her glass-making techniques, while Rick Phillips torches metal sculptures before wondering eyes. Jean Phillips shows multi-layering techniques in Hawaiiana art, and Pierre Bouret talks about the challenges of plein air work at Hanalei Bay.
Many other island artists participate. Wet Paint Studio Tours can provide a current schedule.
